IELTS Requirements for Studying in Australia

English test scores are one of the most common sources of confusion for international students. Here's how requirements generally work across different levels of study in Australia.

Study LevelTypical IELTS Guide
English pathway coursesNo IELTS needed to start — these courses are designed to build you up to the level your main course requires.
Vocational & TAFE (Certificate/Diploma)Often around 5.5–6.0 overall, varying by provider and course.
Undergraduate (Bachelor's)Often around 6.0–6.5 overall, varying by university and course.
Postgraduate (Master's)Often around 6.5–7.0 overall, higher for fields like teaching, nursing or law.

These are general guides, not guarantees — the exact score is always set by the specific institution and course. Always confirm current requirements directly with your chosen university or with a Student Map consultant.

What if my score isn't high enough yet?

This is one of the most common situations we help with — and it's rarely a dead end.

  • Many universities offer their own English pathway programs that lead directly into your main course.
  • Some institutions accept alternative tests (such as PTE Academic or TOEFL iBT) — worth checking if you've already sat one.
  • A conditional offer is common — you can often secure your place first, then meet the English condition before you start.

FAQs

Common questions.

No — many Australian institutions also accept alternatives such as PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT or Cambridge English qualifications. Requirements vary by institution.

Generally no for English-speaking destinations like Australia — for example, Saudi Arabia's Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Scholarship Program does not fund an English preparation year for English-speaking countries. See our Saudi Scholarships guide for details.

IELTS scores are generally considered valid for two years from the test date — but always confirm this with your specific institution, as policies can vary.
